Hinkley Point B Power Station – Declared Fuel Free
EDF have announced that Hinkley Point B power station, the nation’s first operating Advanced Gas cooled Reactor, is confirmed to be ‘fuel free’.
This is a significant achievement for all concerned and has been delivered on time and on budget.
NLF has facilitated over £400m funding for this process to date and will continue to fund the decommissioning work at the Somerset site.
Following Hunterston B last year this marks the second AGR defueling milestone achieved by EDF, working closely with NDA group companies Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS) and Sellafield.
Both Hunterston B and Hinkley Point B stations will transfer to the NDA in the coming year when Nuclear Restoration Services, will become responsible for the full decommissioning of the sites.
NLF CEO Melissa Hope said:
“This is a significant achievement for EDF, the onsite team at Hinkley Point and the NDA group."
“We are proud of our role in ensuring the availability of the funds required to safely defuel this site on time and to budget."
“By investing wisely and working closely with industry colleagues, NLF will ensure the funds are there to deliver the next stages of the UK's nuclear power station decommissioning programme.”
